Weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway

I’m curled up on the couch with my checkered blanket, listening to the hum of the race cars while my babies are sound asleep.

The smell of the roast + potatoes that had been cooking in the crockpot all day is still lingering in the motorhome. Morgan’s new model race car is on the table beside him as he sleeps cozied up, still in his Ricky Thornton shirt that he demanded he sleep in despite wearing it all evening.

It’s been a full day of fun day for us all here at the race track and while I’m sometimes a little sad to have to end my night when the kids do, before everyone else, I’m worn out and was about ready to call it a night anyway!

Morgan always looks forward to going to the races but what he’s more interested in than the actual race is the work that goes into getting the race car ready! Brett said that before Kylie and I arrived in the pits, M laid underneath the car for about an hour, just being in his happy place. The other kids play, but he lives to “work” on stuff! Today he checked out underneath the car again with his Gamp, who just so happens to be the engine builder! How cool is it that Morgan has a grandpa that builds race car engines?!

Kylie is a fan of all the commotion that goes on around here as well as the kids & toys she gets to play with, and the yummy snacks, too. Tonight, on her second night here, she even stayed up late which I was happy about. Otherwise I have to call it a night at 7:30!

The last few times I’ve come to the races, I haven’t made it up to the track to actually watch the race and so was the case last night – Morgan was back and forth between the track and the motorhome with Brett while Kylie and I camped out – literally – in the motorhome. We worked on a puzzle, played with playdough, and worked on our loader and sometimes took a break to check out what was going on at the hauler. We had race track cheeseburgers delivered to us for supper, too (by Brett)!

We all slept in a little this morning and Brett made breakfast for us. Both the kids got a good nap in which made it possible for them both to stay up later than usual like I mentioned before.

This has been my favorite weekend at the races so far, and every one of us enjoyed it so much! I love that Brett’s love for racing (and support of a friend) has turned into family weekends at the dirt track. It’s actually something I never thought I would get into – and honestly I still have no idea what’s going on when it comes to racing – but I love how much fun Morgan has when he’s here. I imagine it feels to him like we are there for HIM and that makes me happy because he deserves to feel that way every once in a while!

This has been a successful start to the busy month of October!

Who needs a sound machine when you have the hum of the race cars…?
